Don’t be the goldfish

by amystratton on March 5, 2015

E + P = O

We can’t always control the (E)vents in our life but we can control our (P)ositive response to these events and this often determines the (O)utcome.

When the change hits instead of focusing on the challenge we can choose to look for the opportunity. We can ask what this event is teaching us and identify how we can grow stronger and wiser from it. We can live in fear or move forward with faith and take positive action.

We can decide to be a Shark instead of a Goldfish? Goldfish become paralyzed by fear. They stay in their comfort zone and wait for someone to feed them. On the other hand Sharks (nice sharks) move forward with faith and take action. They trust that their best days are ahead of them, not behind them. Instead of waiting to be fed they venture out in the ocean of possibility in search of food. Their beliefs and actions create a self filling prophecy; because they expect to find food and take action to find it…they do.

Written by Jon Gordon

“Fear stifles our thinking and actions. It creates indecisiveness that results in stagnation. I have known talented people who procrastinate indefinitely rather than risk failure. Lost opportunities cause erosion of confidence, and the downward spiral begins.”

Never Forget…

Photo Collage Maker_xymTP3Although I love my fat happy Buddha, being fat doesn’t make anyone happy.

I often hear excuses such as:

You only live once” You are right, but don’t you want it to be a long healthy and happy life if you can help it?  I know that you think that McDonald’s cheeseburger, Doritoes, Tastycakes, etc. bring fulfillment to your life, but truly they do not.  Sugar, high fat foods, and chemicals can negatively impact mood causing depression, not to mention that fact that being overweight can do this as well.  Making positive food choices is not punishment and can give one a sense of well being and empowerment over oneself.  It feels good to be healthy and not live in a disheartening yoyo dieting pattern.  This unhealthy pattern can consume and dominate your life.

I exercise so I can eat what I want”Well you may exercise and even be thin, but your insides are fat and your body is suffering.  Poor food choices affect your triglycerides, blood pressure, cholesterol, arteries, liver, bone health, and more.  Cellulite can form from eating a poor diet.  Your skin suffers too when your body isn’t receiving proper nutrients or has to continually flush out bad toxins.  So the next time you think that working out makes up for a poor diet, think again.

Exercising and eating healthy go hand in hand.  You cannot adopt one healthy habit and neglect another.  Start by making small changes and remember that it takes 21 days to make a habit… go for it!

Eating right and exercising doesn’t have to be hard if it becomes a habit.  After all, feeling good about yourself and being healthy surely is less “hard” than being overweight, eating poorly and living a sedentary lifestyle.Photo Collage Maker_VvNKzrWhat do you choose?

Yummy recipe to share:

My friend Keli Engleson posted this recipe on her blog site a while back and recently someone wrote about how tasty it was.  I thought it was beneficial to share this for anyone interested in making this delicious healthy treat.  The ingredients are listed below and you can find the rest of the instructions on Keli’s Yoga Peach site, just click here!

Keli’s Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup raw sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup raw walnuts, coarsely chopped

Updated “Dirty Dozen” list from EWG

by amystratton on February 20, 2015

I recently started juicing again and decided I should check out the Environmental Working Group’s website to get the latest data on produce.  Here is a quick reference as an update to my Dirty Dozen Article from 2013.Screenshot_2015-02-20-09-17-28-1

EWG’s 2014 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce

12 Most Contaminated (Dirty Dozen*)               12 Least Contaminated

Peaches                                                                              Onions

Apples                                                                                Avacado

Sweet Bell Peppers                                                            Sweet Corn (frozen)

Celery                                                                                Pineapples

Nectarines                                                                         Mango

Strawberries                                                                     Asparagus

Cherries                                                                            Sweet Peas (frozen)

Pears                                                                                 Kiwi Fruit

Grapes                                                                              Bananas

Spinach                                                                            Cabbage

Lettuce                                                                             Broccoli

Potatoes                                                                           Papaya

Other important notes from EWG (Environmental Working Group) website:

-Every sample of imported nectarines and 99 percent of apple samples tested positive for at least one pesticide residue.

-The average potato had more pesticides by weight than any other food.

-A single grape sample contained 15 pesticides. Single samples of celery, cherry tomatoes, imported snap peas and strawberries showed 13 different pesticides apiece.

*Dirty Dozen Plus-

Kale and collard greens, and hot peppers do not meet traditional Dirty Dozen ranking criteria but were frequently contaminated with insecticides that are toxic to the human nervous system. EWG recommends that people who eat a lot of these foods buy organic instead.

Carrot vegetable

By the way, I was looking into the best use of carrots in my juice.  Carrots are so good at absorbing heavy metals from soil, they are sometimes grown as a throw away crop to rid a field of lead or arsenic contamination. Always buy organic and Keep the skin on, as most of the nutrients are found there.

Life on life’s terms…

February 19, 2015

Today’s cold weather run…   Yes, it’s easy to complain about the weather: the cold, the heat, the rain, the snow.   Acceptance to anything in life is the key. I love to run because of the feeling of euphoria and satisfaction I feel once completed. I know the health benefits I receive from exercise and […]

Green Tea Latte from Starbucks…truth revealed On a recent trip my brother introduced me to Starbuck’s Green Tea Latte.  He knew I often drank Matcha tea (look for my article on Matcha tea and its health benefits).  This tasty hot beverage is advertised that it’s made with Matcha tea. Since I substituted soymilk for regular milk minus […]
